Thanks! It seems to work great. The only unfortunate thing is it seems to only work over FTP, so one cannot just cut in paste in the HTTP URL of any file as shown on the archive webpage. Or am I missing something?

A couple more suggestions for FTP clients:
LeechFTP, excellent but abandoned. Wonderful interface, my favorite ftp program I use every day. Unfortunately it crashes a lot under XP:

A very good, and more stable, free ftp client, from the Mozilla/Firefox people is FILEZILLA:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558

You could also try the free DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR, which is very fast and allows you to resume files, even from an HTTP link. I won't provide a link here, because the program unfortunately has spyware. If you know your way around the web, you can find a hacked version with no ads and spyware. It works great.

I would recommend Getright (http://www.getright.com/get.html). I download videos via HTTP and it allows resumes.

What's with all this need for third party programs to download files? Just right-click on the filename and save it to your hard drive. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Bruin, it's the need to resume that's the issue. A browser download is easy to do, but if you're in the middle of downloading a 4-gig file, and you have to turn off the computer for a while, a browser won't let you pick up where you left off. FTP clients and download managers will let you do that, if the server supports resuming.

A browser like Opera which has a built-in download manager can be used if one needs to resume. I personally find FileZilla better suited for download, though.

most files have ftp information somewhere on the left-hand-side navigation bar on the page
